Since she was just 6 years old, Carmela has had only one dream: to become a seamstress! So she learns this beautiful craft and, step by step, four years later, she works in a tailor's shop in her city, producing tailor-made women's suits. At 21 she wants to improve her skills but has to stop because she becomes the mother of two children: Luigi and Jolanda. In 2006 she creates something truly new, precious and requested by many famous brands: a completely handmade, tailor-made leather jacket. Year after year she improves her skills and knowledge, proposing a wide range of styles (and not just a simple jacket!). Her classic and most popular garment is the single-breasted jacket, with two or three buttons. But she also makes blousons, reversible coats, trench coats and double-breasted jackets.
Finally, in 2010, she created her own brand, Melina Napoli, a small single-family business of custom leather goods, based in Sarno (about 20 minutes by car from Naples).
Carmela and her daughter Jolanda work with a variety of leathers and suedes, but the most popular is a baby calfskin with a nubuck-like finish: a lightweight, very soft leather that is also nice and matte. Not only is it lovely, but the texture is very subtle: a world away from the sheen we might associate with tailored jackets. Most of the other leathers used are exotics like alligator and ostrich, which are obviously more flashy.
Their work emphasises hand finishing on the outside, with topstitching around all seams, buttons and buttonholes sewn by hand. The main attraction of the product, however, is the stitching.
Cutting leather is an art that requires precision, patience, and a deep understanding of the material. Leather, with its soft texture and tendency to move and stretch, presents a unique challenge for every tailor. Before starting the cut, it is essential to take the time to understand how the pattern will fit the leather, a process that can take up to an hour of careful planning. This step is similar to solving a puzzle, where each piece must find its ideal place: the slight colour variations in the leather require that adjacent segments, such as those along the side seams, have a uniform tone to ensure a harmonious and aesthetically impeccable result.
Sartoria Melina's tailored jackets stand out for details that express artisanal excellence. For example, the back and front of the jackets are made with just two pieces of leather, instead of the four commonly used, giving the garment a refined and tailored aesthetic. Even the buttonholes, true masterpieces of craftsmanship, are cut by hand using a hammer and chisel, before being finished with manual stitching that guarantees durability and perfection.
